Mutual Fund Return Calculator

The mutual fund return calculator helps you compute the absolute return, annualized return (CAGR), and total value of your mutual fund investment based on the invested amount and current value or NAV changes.

    Absolute Return75%

    What Your Results Mean

The absolute return tells you the total percentage gain or loss on your investment. The annualized return (CAGR) normalizes this over time so you can compare with other investments. A fund showing 75% absolute return over 3 years sounds impressive, but at ~20.5% CAGR, you can fairly compare it with other options.

    What This Calculator Does

Enter the investment amount, current value (or beginning and ending NAV), and the investment period. The calculator shows your absolute return, annualized return (CAGR), and profit/loss amount.

    How the Calculation Works

The calculator computes the total return using the simple formula of (Current Value - Invested Amount) / Invested Amount. It then annualizes this using CAGR. For NAV-based calculation, it uses the NAV ratio.

    Calculation Logic (Simplified)

    Absolute Return = ((Current Value - Invested) / Invested) × 100. CAGR = (Current Value / Invested)^(1/years) - 1.

    Example Calculation

    Invested ₹2,00,000 and current value is ₹3,50,000 after 3 years: Absolute return = 75%, CAGR = 20.51%.

    When to Use This Calculator

    • You want to check how much your mutual fund has earned since you invested
    • You need to compare performance of two or more funds held for different durations
    • You're evaluating whether your fund is beating its benchmark index
    • You want to convert a total return into an annualized figure for fair comparison

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

    • Comparing absolute returns of investments held for different periods — always use CAGR for fair comparison
    • Ignoring expense ratios when evaluating fund performance — they directly reduce your net returns
    • Evaluating mutual fund returns over very short periods (under 1 year) — short-term returns are noisy
    • Not benchmarking against the fund's index — a 12% return is poor if the index returned 15%

    Benefits & Use Cases

    • Track your mutual fund investment performance
    • Compare returns across different funds
    • Understand absolute vs annualized returns
    • Evaluate if your fund is meeting expectations

    Assumptions and Limitations

    Assumptions

    • The investment amount and current value are accurately entered
    • The time period is measured in complete years for CAGR calculation
    • No additional investments or withdrawals occurred during the period

    Limitations

    • This calculator works for a single lumpsum investment — for SIPs, use XIRR instead
    • Dividends reinvested are only captured if reflected in the current NAV or value
    • Tax on capital gains is not deducted from the return calculation
    • The result doesn't account for expense ratio impact separately
